Vision Statement

Connecticut Farms Presbyterian Church (“CFPC”) is rooted in history, grounded in love, and growing in faith. As a multicultural, caring church family, we share God’s compassion, wisdom, and joy with our community and each other.

Who We Are

Connecticut Farms Presbyterian Church ("The Church on the Hill") is a multicultural faith community with a rich history dating back to 1730.

As the oldest church in Union, New Jersey, we are proud of our pivotal role in the American Revolution, notably as a base for the fiery patriotic preacher, James Caldwell.

Today, we are a vibrant blend of multi-generational families and new immigrants, all woven into a warm and welcoming spiritual home. We are dedicated to continuing a legacy of faith, fostering deep connections, serving our community, and supporting one another through life's challenges and joys.

We embrace the truth that none of us are perfect, and we extend forgiveness freely, fostering strong bonds and genuine connections. Studies even show that being part of a faith community can lead to healthier and longer lives!

Our Faith & Beliefs

As humble disciples, we strive to serve God in every aspect of our lives, recognizing Him as our ultimate Savior. We share the Good News not from a place of superiority, but with profound freedom, hope, and companionship, living out the pattern of

Christ and inviting others to experience His transformative love with us.

Beliefs

At the core of our faith is the belief that “God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself” (II Corinthians 5:19). In the teachings, healings, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, we see the heart of God revealed.

God is infinite and beyond imagining, yet in the incarnation, Spirit and matter are joined, and through sacrificial love, the power of evil is broken. We affirm “the whole Gospel for the whole person,” knowing that God wants us to have life, and to have it in abundance (John 10:10).

While each of us encounters God individually in prayer and the witness of conscience, we also need the community of the church to care for others, grow in wisdom, learn forgiveness, hear God’s Word preached, and receive the sacraments.

Our Presbyterian Tradition

We are a Presbyterian congregation, a democratic form of Protestantism led by elders elected by the membership for terms of service. We are part of the Reformed tradition in Christianity, influenced by figures like John Calvin, John Knox, and many others. A key aspect of our tradition is its capacity for change and grow; we are “the church reformed, always being reformed” (semper reformanda). We are guided by a set of Confessions of Faith that apply the Bible to current knowledge and concerns, ranging from the Apostles' Creed to statements from the current century.

CONFESSIONS OF FAITH

Contemporary Presbyterian/Reformed writers who inspire us include Frederick Buechner, Marilynne Robinson, Kathleen Norris, Anne Lamott, Peter Wehner, and Patrick Henry.
